Brazilian Federal Agency CAPES Expands Local Research Community Access to Scopus

AMSTERDAM – March 23, 2009 – Elsevier announced today that the Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) is expanding local research community access to Scopus®, the company’s flagship product and the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. CAPES, which assists the Brazilian Ministry of Education in the formulation of national policies related to post-graduate study, will be making Scopus available to 200 universities and research institutes in Brazil, up from 44 in 2007.
“We chose Scopus for its comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage and it has exceeded our expectations, becoming an integral part of our mission to provide the most in-depth and up-to-date global knowledge to the research community we serve,” said CAPES President Professor Jorge Guimarães. “The positive feedback we have received has led us to offer the database to additional universities. The performance measurement capability has also been very valuable in tracking Brazilian research output and comparing our progress to other nations.”
"We are very pleased that CAPES has chosen to expand the relationship as it indicates the research community’s satisfaction with our database,” added Niels Weertman, Director of Scopus for Elsevier. “We look forward to continuing to work together to support scientific advancement in Brazil.”

About CAPES
Founded in 1951, CAPES assists the Brazilian Ministry of Education in the formulation of national policies related to post-graduate study. Through CAPES, the Brazilian government provides a beneficial service to Brazil’s academic community: the Publications Gateway.  Created in 2000 by CAPES, the gateway is one of the greatest bases of scientific information in the world. Its goal is to reduce regional imbalances by providing free access to quality scientific and technological information to scientists, professors and students in 194 universities and research institutes.

About Scopus
Covering the world’s research literature, Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality Web sources with smart tools to track analyze and visualize research. Scopus was designed and developed with over 500 users and librarians internationally. Its unique database contains abstracts and references from over 15,000 peer-reviewed journals (including more than 200 Brazilian journals) from 4,000 publishers worldwide, ensuring broad interdisciplinary coverage. In addition, Scopus not only offers users citation information about the articles covered, but also directly integrates Web and patent searches. Direct links to full-text articles, library resources and other applications like reference management software, make Scopus quicker, easier and more comprehensive to use than any other literature research tool. Scopus Selected by the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (iFQ) to Analyze German and International Research to Establish Government Funding Policies

-- Citation Database to Be Used in New Competence Centre for Bibliometrics --

AMSTERDAM, March 19, 2009 – Elsevier announced today that its flagship product Scopus (www.info.scopus.com), the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, was chosen by the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (iFQ) to be used in the development of its new German Competence Centre for Bibliometrics. The iFQ is a scientific institute that was created by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) to focus on assessing Germany’s funding programs, and analyzing their global impact.

The Competence Centre is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF). The centre’s goals are to set up a bibliometric database and develop checked bibliometric methods and indicators that meet today’s requirements in reliability and validity. Scopus data and other bibliographic datasets will be used to quantify German research output and evaluate the impact it is having on the global scientific landscape. This insight will allow for a better understanding of how local researchers, institutions and funding agencies perform in areas key to German science policy and will ultimately be used to identify excellence and weakness within the German research system.

“Among other data sources we will work with Scopus for the depth and international breadth of its citation database,” said Professor Stefan Hornbostel of iFQ. “The analytical capabilities that the content provides will help us achieve our mission of supporting the German science system with carefully examined and relevant information feeding into policies that will allow Germany to continue to be a global scientific leader.”

“We are excited to be a part of the iFQ’s new German Competence Centre for Bibliometrics,” said Niels Weertman, Director of Scopus for Elsevier. “Making the right investment decisions is an integral part of achieving scientific breakthroughs and we are confident we can deliver valuable insight through Scopus.”

Information about the German Competence Centre for Bibliometrics is available at www.bibliometrie.info.

The Australian Research Council Selects Scopus for the evaluation of the Australian research landscape

AMSTERDAM – February 20, 2009 – Elsevier announced today that Scopus®, its flagship product and world’s largest abstract and citation (A&C) database, was chosen by the Australian Research Council (ARC) for its Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative.

The ERA initiative will assess research quality within Australia's higher education institutions using a combination of indicators and expert review by committees comprised of experienced, internationally-recognized experts.

Scopus Custom Data will be the sole provider used to assess the country’s higher education research output for the ERA’s first group of science disciplines: Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences (PCE).

By leveraging the broad and rich content available in Scopus the ARC’s ERA initiative will evaluate 41 Higher Education Providers (HEPs) using international and national benchmarks.

“The ARC is committed to the development of a world-class research quality and evaluation system” Professor Sheil said, CEO of the ARC.

“Identifying research excellence in this global environment is incredibly complex, which is why we are proud that the ARC will utilize Scopus to reach its ERA goals,” added Herman Van Campenhout, CEO Science & Technology for Elsevier. “Through this relationship, we hope to open doors for Australian universities by giving them a better understanding of where they stand in the research playing field, and where to invest scarce resources.”
